Rail Encapsulation Protection System

The twin block Rail Encapsulation Protection System comprises inner and outer rail web dampers—split version types additionally incorporate rubber inserts beneath—and a rail base boot. These components are bonded to the rail with structural adhesive, with sealant applied to the rail crown and splicing joints to complete closure. This configuration ensures mechanical integrity, environmental sealing, and electrical insulation throughout the encapsulated assembly.

    Component Materials

The Rail Encapsulation Protection System is engineered from high performance resilient resin compounded with rubber granules and incorporates internal cavities. This composite construction delivers efficient vibration attenuation and noise reduction across the operational frequency range, while the material's inherent dielectric properties ensure robust electrical isolation, effectively containing stray currents generated during tram operation and preventing their dissipation into the surrounding trackbed environment.

    Material and Mechanism

The twin-block rail web damper is fabricated from elastomeric compounds. Vibration energy imparted to the rail is dissipated through internal molecular friction within the material matrix, while the inherent resilience of the compound simultaneously provides effective vibration isolation. A notable practical advantage lies in its dimensional stability: the product resists deformation during packaging and transit, facilitates straightforward on-site storage, and enables reliable installation without the handling difficulties commonly associated with more delicate damping solutions.

Primary Functions of the Encapsulation System

Vibration and noise attenuation – The system contributes substantial mass to the rail section, achieving efficient energy absorption. The grooved rail damper delivers continuous contact damping, ensuring consistent grooved rail vibration reduction and grooved rail noise control across the service life, without the performance degradation typical of discrete support arrangements.
Dynamic response – The rail waist filler material maintains uninterrupted interface contact, providing stable dynamic behaviour under varying operational loads and thermal regimes.
Service life prolongation – By attenuating impact forces and restraining relative movement between the rail and encasement, the rail bottom sheath protection retards fatigue accumulation in both rail and supporting structure, extending their maintenance intervals.
Stray current containment – The encapsulation layer provides electrical isolation essential for rail encapsulation for light rail applications, preventing electrochemical corrosion of embedded metallic components.

    System Integration

The grooved rail wrapping material interfaces seamlessly with floating slab track systems, where the rail side transition structure accommodates differential displacements between rail and slab. The tram rail flexible coating structure, together with associated wrapping materials, ensures protective function throughout the design life without delamination or seal failure.
