Smart New Vibration Stopper Could Extend Rail Noise Control to High Frequencies
A smart new vibration stopper has just been published in Engineering Structures (December 2025). Researchers created an "Obstacle Grid Tuned Particle Impact Damper" (OG-TPID) that tackles a tough problem: mid-to-high frequency noise from rail tracks. How It Works
The OG-TPID mixes two proven ideas. One is the classic tuned mass damper (TMD). The other is particle damping – tiny metal particles inside a box; as they rub and collide, they turn vibration into heat. The team added vertical or tilted grids inside the box, made by 3D printing (selective laser melting). These grids make the particles work harder. For track engineers, pairing this with a Broadband Rail Damper means you attack noise from two angles: one passive particle box, one proven rail-mounted damper.
The Results Are Clear
The best version (tilted grids) achieved 11.1 dB/m peak reduction from 1300–3000 Hz. That is 8.1 dB/m better than older designs without grids. It also lowered total sound power by 4.7 dB in the 1250–2250 Hz range – a very useful band for rail noise.
