Embedded Rail System

Key Technical Parameters
Application and Structural Principle
The Embedded rail system is specifically designed for tramway at-grade crossings and sections with shared right-of-way between trams and road vehicles. In this configuration, the rail is continuously fixed and supported within a recessed concrete slab, using a high-performance polymer compound as the encapsulating and load-transfer medium. The rail profile is almost entirely enveloped by the elastomeric material, leaving only the running surface exposed.
Mechanical Advantages of Continuous Support
Continuous support along the rail length reduces bending stresses and minimises fatigue accumulation compared with discrete fastening points. The system optimises both vertical and lateral stiffness distribution across the track structure, effectively addressing the pavement cracking and settlement issues commonly observed at level crossings where conventional fastening assemblies are employed. Rail unevenness is substantially reduced, which in turn attenuates vibration transmission to the surrounding environment.
Adjustment and Stability Features
Wedge-type rail adjustment components secure lateral positioning and prevent rail uplift under traction or braking forces. Elevation corrections are conveniently effected by shims placed beneath the rail. The grooved rail incorporates a wide base flange, which enhances embedment stability and provides superior resistance to rail fracture, overturning, and thermal buckling—critical considerations in exposed surface installations subject to diurnal temperature variation.
Noise and Cost Benefits
The complete encasement of the rail within the elastic polymer serves a dual acoustic function: it reduces the generation of rolling noise at the source and diminishes the reflective surface area through which noise would otherwise propagate. The overall system proves economically viable, balancing material and installation costs against extended maintenance intervals and reduced lifecycle expenditure. This combination of performance attributes positions the Embedded rail system as a progressive solution commensurate with future track structure development trends.
